Skyla
Skyla is a super sweet, affectionate 9-10 month old Catahoula / husky mix that weighs 35 lbs. She is estimated to be around 40-45 lbs once she is full grown. Skyla’s personality truly shines through in everything she does; she is affectionate, playful, friendly, and full of joyful puppy energy. Skyla absolutely adores her people and thrives on human companionship. Being near her humans is her favorite place to be, whether that means tagging along on outdoor adventures, joining you for a walk around the neighborhood, or relaxing together on the couch after a fun day. She has a wonderful balance of playful energy and cuddle time, making her an ideal companion for someone looking for both an active dog and a loving snuggle buddy. When out in public, Skyla is a total social butterfly. She loves meeting new people and greets everyone with enthusiasm and a wagging tail. She’s the type of dog who believes every stranger is just a friend she hasn’t met yet. Skyla happily soaks up affection from anyone willing to give it and often rolls right onto her back for belly rubs as soon as someone stops to say hello. Her friendly, outgoing nature makes her a joy to take along on outings and adventures. Skyla is also very intelligent and eager to learn. She picks up new commands and routines quickly and genuinely enjoys training sessions, especially when they involve positive reinforcement and praise. She loves mental stimulation and engaging activities, and would thrive in a home that enjoys continuing her training. With her smarts, athleticism, and enthusiasm, Skyla would be an excellent candidate for agility courses, enrichment games, or other interactive dog sports.
Skyla is low to medium energy, so she enjoys a nice balance of playtime, fun outdoor activities, and relaxation. She needs a few short energy-burning activities throughout the day, whether that is just a couple of short walks around the neighborhood or a longer hike on nature trails. She enjoys playing with her toys and chewing on bully sticks when her foster mom is busy around the house, but when she is outside in the backyard she prefers to lounge around and sunbathe while chewing on a bone. She loves to follow her foster mom around the house and wants to be in the same room as her, but she is good about self-entertaining and will grab a chew bone or one of her toys, plop down on a dog bed, and entertain herself until she's ready for a nap. She enjoys puzzle games, treat dispensing toys, and other activities that give her a bit of mental stimulation. She would love to have a family that enjoys the outdoors and would take her on fun adventures exploring nature trails, hiking through forests and mountains, and splashing around at a rivers and lakes. Her ideal home will have a toy box full of squeaky toys, ropes, and chew toys, and she’d be thrilled to have a BarkBox subscription to keep the fun going with new surprises every month.
Skyla is dog and kid friendly, but has not been introduced to cats inside a home environment. Skyla is your typical husky, so she prefers her people over other dogs. However, she truly enjoys having playdates with other dogs and loves the opportunity to run, play, and socialize, especially with dogs that match her size and energy level. She has a playful spirit and benefits from regular canine interactions to help her burn off energy and continue building confidence. That said, Skyla would prefer to be the only dog in her forever home so she can soak up all the love, attention, and one-on-one time from her humans. She thrives when she can be the center of attention and doesn’t have to compete for toys, treats, or affection inside her home, so Skyla would do best with frequent, structured playdates rather than a full-time canine sibling. Continued socialization and guidance will help her further develop appropriate dog-to-dog communication skills, and she responds well when interactions are managed thoughtfully. In her current foster home, she enjoys playing and cuddling with the senior resident pittie and clearly appreciates calm companionship. However, she does not like sharing toys or chew bones and prefers to have her own items, making a single-dog household the best long-term fit for her comfort and success. She is much more comfortable interacting with dogs her own size or larger, particularly those with laid-back personalities. Overall, Skyla does best with calm, respectful canine companions during playdates, but truly shines as the sole dog in the home. When it comes to cats, Skyla has only been around outdoor neighborhood cats and she doesn't pay them any attention. Cats will come into her foster's backyard and walk around the yard and perch up on the fence when Skyla is outside, and she doesn't even look twice at them when she's outside sunbathing or going potty. It is unknown how she would do inside a home environment with cats, so to be on the safe side, it is recommended that there be very slow intros with baby gates so that it does not overwhelm Skyla or the kitty. Skyla has been around younger toddlers and usually just kept her distance. She allowed pets, but would go lay down after she got a little affection from them. She really only showed interest in them when they would cry, then she would go over and rest her head near them, otherwise she just did her own thing. She would prefer to be around older kids that can play and cuddle with her.
Skyla is potty trained and leash trained, and has almost mastered kennel training. She walks well on a leash and enjoys going on walks, but occasionally pulls when excited. She is not reactive to other dogs or people, but she does get excited to see a new person and will plop down and roll on her back for belly rubs when they get close and talk to her. She can be encouraged to continue on the walk with treats though. She will notify you that she needs to go outside by lingering around the back door and will bark to alert that she's at the door if not let out quickly. She does well on a routine schedule and will not have an accident as long as she is taken out every few hours. She sleeps in a kennel at night, but she usually has to be encouraged with a yummy treat to go in for the night. She would happily sleep in bed with her human at night and would be fine being left out while you are sleeping. She does need to be kenneled in an indestructible kennel whenever her human is not home. If she is left out while no one is home, she will bark and cry at the door and try to climb up to see out the window to see where her human went, and may pull window treatments down in the process. She needs someone that is home more often than not, so someone that works from home, is retired, or a stay at home spouse is necessary. She cannot be in a home where she is kenneled for 8+ hours a day and also kenneled at night.
Skyla's ideal home would be one where she can be included in her family’s daily life and get plenty of love, adventures, and cuddle time. She must live in a home with a fenced yard to run and sunbathe in, and because of her love for the outdoors, she'd do best in this type of home environment. She will do best with having someone home most of the day, so someone that works from home, is retired, or is a stay at home spouse is preferred. She would prefer to be the only dog in the home so she can soak up all the love, attention, and one-on-one time from her humans. She can live with a laid back, calmer medium to large dog as long as they can be fed separately as Skyla doesn't like to share her personal space with another dog while she is eating. No public dog parks for this sweet girl (who wants to risk your pup catching a disease or being bullied on by other random dogs anyways), but she would love to have fun adventures at Sniff Spots or doggy day care occasionally for playtime and exercise. Skyla is a loving, intelligent, and loyal young pup who is ready to settle into her forever home and give her whole heart to her people. With the right environment, consistent love, and inclusion in daily life, she will thrive and become an incredible lifelong companion. If you’re looking for a devoted adventure buddy who also loves to snuggle, soak up the sun, and be your constant sidekick, Skyla may be the perfect match for your family
