Candy

Candy is a sweet, gentle 1 year old Golden Retriever / Hound mix that weighs 40 lbs. She is around her full grown size and should not get any larger. Candy is an incredibly loving and mild-mannered girl with that is perfect for a laid back, easy going family. She enjoys the simple things in life like lounging peacefully while sunbathing on the patio, stretching out in a cozy spot by your feet, or going on leisurely walks along quiet nature trails where she can explore at her own pace. She doesn’t need constant activity to be happy as she’s content just being near her people, soaking up love and companionship. She has a tender, sensitive heart and truly blossoms with patience and encouragement. Rather than greeting you with big jumps and boundless enthusiasm, Candy is more of a quiet wallflower. She’ll calmly wait her turn, watching with soft eyes, until she’s invited in for affection. And once she feels safe and comfortable, her silly, affectionate personality begins to shine. That’s when you’ll see her sweet little tail wags, gentle nudges for pets, and the loving devotion she has for her people. She's very obedient and a quick learner when it comes to picking up routines and new training skills. Candy responds beautifully to positive reinforcement such as a gentle voice filled with praise and a few yummy treats. Because of her submissive, laid-back demeanor, she would do best in a home that offers reassurance rather than loud energy. She truly thrives in environments that are calm and with people that are reassuring, allowing her to build her confidence at her own pace. Candy is ready to give her whole heart to someone special. If you’re looking for a gentle soul to share quiet mornings, afternoon sunshine, and cozy evenings, Candy may be the perfect addition to your life.

Candy is lower energy, so she is best described as a laid back couch potato. She is pretty mellow but does enjoy short daily walks around the neighborhood or exploring nature trails at a leisurely pace. Currently she goes on two 15-30 minute walks per day and that's the perfect amount of exercise for her. Once she has had her short exercise session, she loves to cuddle up next to her human for some snuggles and belly rubs. She is best described as an active couch potato because she's happy to lounge around as long as her human wants to, but the minute you want to go outside and play fetch in the backyard, she's ready to join you. Her favorite activities involve just being with her humans. Whether it is a game of fetch, mental stimulation activities like hide and seek games with hidden treats, or a good game of tug-o-war, she is happy to partake. She loves her toys, chews, and puzzle games, and can happily entertain herself while you’re busy. She would be really happy if she had a monthly BarkBox subscription so she can get new fun toys and chews each month. Puzzle games and chew bones will also be great for keeping her busy indoors if you work from home because she will happily spend time curled up on a dog bed right next to your desk as you work.

Candy is dog, cat, and kid friendly. She is very submissive with other dogs and prefers calmer, lower energy dogs to interact with. She is currently in a foster home with large, very high energy Dalmatians and she coexists with them, but doesn't interact with them much due to their strong, in-your-face personalities. She will play with her toys near them, but doesn't engage in play with them because they can get too rough and tumble for her liking. She would do best with calmer, lower energy dogs that are more similar to her personality and play style. She has learned proper doggy communication skills and boundaries from other dogs, and is very respectful of other dogs' personal space. She does enjoy spending time around the outdoor neighborhood cat that hangs out in the backyard of her foster home. She will find a spot on the patio or grass next to the kitty to sprawl out and take a nap while she sunbathes. If there is a cat in her forever home, she would be perfectly content being a quiet, calm companion to them. Candy is currently in a foster home with a younger child and does great with her. She's very gentle and patient with her and enjoys watching her play with her toys, but sometimes will chew on children's toys left out on the floor. She can be easily redirected with a dog toy instead, but will need to be monitored to make sure she doesn't help herself to a child's toy to chew on. She would be able to join a family with one or two older children that are understanding of her quiet, gentle personality, but would prefer not to be in a home with multiple loud, high energy children as she may get startled and want to hide from them.

Candy is kennel trained, potty trained, and leash trained. She sleeps in a kennel at night with no fuss and loves to be wrapped up inside a cozy blanket while she sleeps. She enjoys being tucked in with a treat and her favorite stuffed animal to cuddle with. She would love to snuggle up in bed with her humans every night so she can get in as many cuddles as possible once she is in her forever home. She is potty trained and will not have an accident inside her kennel at night. She does notify her fosters that she needs to go out to potty by standing, pacing, and whining at the back door. She will need to have consistent potty breaks to get on a good routine once she is in her forever home, so she will need someone that either works from home or lives nearby work so they can take her out for potty breaks on their lunch break while she settles in. She is leash trained and enjoys going on walks each day. She's still learning how to build her confidence so she does freeze in place when she hears a loud car muffler passing by or sirens. As soon as the loud sounds pass her, she continues on her walk. She does need a patient person to continue working with her to build her confidence in the outside world, but she has made great progress so far in her foster home.

Candy's ideal home would be a house with a fenced in backyard to sunbathe and play in. She would do well in an apartment, condo or townhouse in a quiet, calm neighborhood on a first floor apartment with no stairs. Because of her submissive, laid-back demeanor, she would do best in a home that offers reassurance rather than loud or chaotic energy. It is preferred that her human either works from home or that can go home on lunch breaks to take her out. She would benefit from going to doggy day care a few times a week if there are no other dogs in the home so that she can have some fun playing with other doggy friends and build her confidence more. No public dog parks for this little girl because who wants to risk your pup catching a disease or being bullied on by other random dogs anyways. She would do love to have a family that has other dogs and older kids, and would coexist well if there's a kitty in the home too. Candy would thrive with a patient adopter who understands that the most beautiful bonds sometimes take a little time to build. In return, she’ll offer unwavering loyalty, gentle affection, and a lifetime of quiet devotion.
